Hi all,

I have a 2620XM router with a 16NM Layer 2 switching module installed

My question is once I get all my VLANs set up on the 16 port switch that I want. Do I need to connect a cable to the fast ethernet port on the router with its subinterfaces setup for routering across the vlans that I choose or can I connect them in the CLI?

I am thinking that I will have to have

fa0/0 (Router) <-Cat5e-> fa1/1 (Switch (Trunk))

as they are in the same router thought it might be possible to connect in software.

They connect via backplane, so as long as you have routing on (on by default) fe0/0 will happily route with all vlans you have. You must remember to create Interface vlanX for each of your vlans!

Cool so all I have to do is set up the fe0/0 sub interfaces for all the vlans and they will be routed by it automatically?

Tried on PT, setting up like you said.

I had to use a 2811 router with 16NM installed, as PT doesnt let you install it in the 2620xm

I am using this configuration

Code:
Router#sh run

Now my 3 Computers can talk to each other on the same VLAN and my 2 other computers can talk on their VLAN.

I cant get computers talking to each other over separate VLANs though when I have set up Fa0/0 to have the sub interfaces for the VLANS 11,22

Not sure how to make it work

No need to create the sub-interfaces at Fa0/0. As Agent Zed said, you have to create a virtual INTERFACE for each vlan. Like this:

interface Vlan11
ip address 192.168.11.1 255.255.255.0
no shut

interface Vlan22
ip address 192.168.22.1 255.255.255.0
no shut

Infact now you have to remove those fa0/0 subs because they would conflict with those IPs above. I just tried it in PT and it works. I could attach that file if you like.

It is also important to remember that the VLAN sub-ints (e.g. Fa0/0.11) is not the same as one of the NM ports in Vlan11.

If you want built in ports and NM ports to be in the same logical VLAN then you would have to look at something like IRB or CRB.

if i set one of the nm ports to a trunk then hook a cable from it to fa0/0 with that set up with the sub interfaces will that work?

That doesnt work as my 16nm module is a Layer 2 device only it wont allow ip address to be added

Are you sure!!??, Have you tried it?. I thought the 2620XM (layer 3) is the one adding the IP address not the 16NM. Weird is works on PT with the 2811 though.

As for compatibility, Cisco lists the 2600 routers under the compatibility list of the NM-ESW-16. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collate ... aca3e.html (table 3)

It should work, it would be nuts if you had connect a trunk cable from the fa0/0 to the NM16 just to make it route.

This is on the router not PT

If i open int fa1/0 (First port on the NM)

and go

no switchport mode access
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

It throughs back an error, cant remember what the error is at the moment but opon googling it. It was about no Layer 3 support on the nm module

Look at the config above, you create the IP address on the vlan interface, not the physical interface

The above config is off PT, I will build one on the router after work.

And give it another go then will post the config.

When I try to do that on the router, (Fresh build)

This is the error it throws back % IP addresses may not be configured on L2 links.

Are you doing that on the Fa1/x interfaces though or are you doing it on the VlanXX SVI's as per S0lo's post above.

Yes I was trying that on the

int f1/0
ip address 192.168.11.1 255.255.255.0

That failed

Why? You've been told twice already to create the address on the VLAN interface

Post the output of this on your box:

Code:
int fa1/0
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 50

int vlan 50
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

I want to see exactly what you see.

post an output of this as well:

Code:
sh ver
