I'm graduating from university soon and have opportunity to take an optional test for a CCNA qualification. However, I haven't had time to really take-in everything from the CCNA course and will need to do a lot of revision.

I was planning on going through all the lecture slides, lab books and text boos again, but know I would learn better if actually building the networks physically. I'm wondering what your opinions are on this, as I know the equipment can be quite expensive (I haven't had time to research into how much).

If not, would you recommend a network simulator?

Dynamips/GNS3 is a great tool for free. Throw a couple 3550s in the mix and you will have a solid lab. I recommend picking up the offical certification guides form CiscoPress and run through those along with hands on and you will be set.

Dont take the tests lightly though as the CCNA is pretty tough.

Thank you for your reply. I just looked up GNS3 and it seems better than Packet Tracer. Apparently it's more realistic.

The CCNA does look difficult! I suppose won't be able to do the exam for a while :(

The only thing GNS3 can't really help you with is practicing the switching side of things. Stick with Packet Tracer for that unless you're going to throw the cash at physical switches or time renting switches from an online training provider / lab provider.

The only other thing about GNS/Dynamips is you need a "real" IOS image of a compatible router model (example 1700, 2600, 3600 or 7200 series). If you have a lab with real kit at your University, consider TFTP'ing an image from the Router flash to your USB.

Some images don't work due to various bugs but if you do get an image that does work reliably then GNS/Dynamips is awesome and is used as a serious tool up to CCIE level studies.

Thank you for your replies!

I don't mind using both. I can get a copy of an IOS from university. It would be so much better to learn practically though...

Do you have an idea of how much all the equipment (including cabling) could add up to if you purchase them second hand?

PacketTracer should be fine for CCNA. I had access to actual 2600 and 1800 series routers and I forget the switch models as well as PT. You can also pick up a lot of good used equipment suitable for CCNA level off of ebay. I have two 2600 series routers that and a 3500 catalyst switch and paid well under 100 combined for all three.
