Is the Cisco IOS version specific to the number of ports?

IE, would a 24pt 2960 switch use the same IOS version as an 8 pt 2960 switch? Or is there a different IOS for each number of ports?

:thankyou:

Generally, it is not specific to the number of ports.

it would be specific to the amount of flash and memory of the device

*generally* it's not contingent on the number of ports in that the code for a 24-port 2960 would be the same for the 48-port version of the same switch.

But what I would caution you on is that I've been burned by not looking very carefully at the exact part number.

Best thing to do is to do a "show version" command and get the exact model number of the switch. Then make sure you are working with the code for that exact model number, be it a 24 or 48-port model.

Well Cisco has made it easy now.

You simply register a "MY Cisco" account, free, and then tell Cisco what kind of hardware you have. It will ask you for the specfic model and current firmware that a SH VER will tell you.

Then you click on your new entry in the list of your registered hardware and click on downloads. Then you can see a spreadsheet column on the left that will tell you all available and compatible IOS/Catalyst software your device supports. I hope its not catalyst OS but non the less if it can run it will list it. Also there are build notes for each version including disclaimers, warnings, and how to install etc...

Really cool that they did this as I love it. The site will also tell you if you need a TAC/warranty contract to download the latest and greatest software. They seem to really want to do that with their routers and ASA's. They seem to be more lenient with switching gear.

If you have more recent gear Cisco has also made the move to a universal IOS image which is seriously smart on their part. It just works across all their hardware in the categories that it supports. It will also detect your licensing structure that you have installed etc....

Verify your MD5 hashes from the Cisco downloads page. You will find that with the same version of switch - albeit with different ports uses the same IOS image, file name and contains the same MD5 hash.
