Hi,

I have a Netcomm router which I've had working as my ADSL and my wireless AP.

I connected a DLink router via ethernet so as to extend the range of my WIFI.

This has worked, but now I cant log in to my DLink router.

It started with IP 10.1.1.1
After setting it up to not do automatic dhcp and then plugging it in to my Netcomm (which is on 192.168.1) I can no longer find the DLink, whether connected over ethernet or wireless.

Could someone explain to me how it might have had its IP changed as it join the network?

And what might its new IP be?

I've run IP Scanner and Network Device Scanner, and they cant find it.

Thank you

That is routing, 10.1.1.1 and 192.168.1 are on different networks (in effect your Dlink and your PC don't know how to reach each other). Give that Dlink an IP address from the same range as your pc/Netcomm and try again.

Also you might want to set up same SSID and access key on both routers so it would work as a single network. I think you need to use different channels, but better if both routers are on same frequency band(2.4GHz or 5GHz), but either way computers will connect to the one that has sronger signal. Experienced people, correct me if i'm wrong

thank you every one,

zed, I cant even find 10.1.1.1 - even when I plug in to dlink via ethernet. Its like its ip address has been over written.

Any suggestion?

That is the point, 10.1.1.1 is a different network, physical connection is there, logical connection is broken however. It's like putting two people speaking different languages in the same room, they can hear each other but can't make a conversation without aid of a translator. Same way two different networks cannot see each other without routing in between.

Try to give the second router an address from the same network instead (192.168.1.x) and try again :)

how do I log in to my d-link if I cant get to it via 10.1.1.1?

And - I dont understand - if I plug in to the d-link via ethernet, surely I am then on the d-link network and 10.1.1.1 should work. Its like it has been overwritten by being on the other network.

How do I find its IP address?

Patience is a virtue :wall:. It's not on the same network, no. You need to change the IP address to 192.168.1.x, only then they will be on the same network and you will be able to get to it.

The simplest way is unplug it from the network.
Reset it with the button on the back
Plug it too 1 PC with a cable.
Change the lan IP too 192.168.1.x (X being a number that is not part of the current routers DHCP pool )
Set main router to start dchp at 100 and end at 200. then you can set the dlink from either 2 too 99
Shut off dchp server then plug back too the lan.

Thank you Alan, I guess I'll do this.

I still would like to understand what the 2nd router would have vhanged its IP to, after I plugged it in tot he first router.

And Zed, to change to IP, did you mean to do what Alan is suggesting and reset my router?

You need to start off at where the router did work the last time. I would change the IP of your PC to 10.1.1.2 for the time being, connect to the router and fix the config. Set the PC back to what it was and all should work ok.

thanks - I had no idea I could change my computers IP address, or that without automatic dhcp that my computer wouldn't be assigned to the 10.1.1 network

thank you for your patience and your help

I've learned a lot
