We are running multiple Linux-based servers at our university..The task assigned to us by our seniors is that we have to setup an SNMP that sends an alarm if one of the servers is down.
Upon searching frantically I found Zenoss but I am completely helpless in sorting out the solution to the a fore-mentioned problem.
If I have left out any details in this topic please do let me know.
Bewildered
Thanks NF

Nagios is complicated, but built for this.

SNMP can indeed tell you if a server is up (and tell you much more), but it's overkill if you just want ping tests. Simpler network monitoring solutions can do basic ping tests at a fraction of the effort.

zenoss is also built for this and way easy to do. I'll see if I can find how I set it up

Takes a little bit to get working, but once you get it working it does a good job

This. If all you're checking is reachability, PING will do it for you.

Yeah reachability too but not only reachability..I want to be able to do some maintenance tasks too..Like if one server goes down or if there is a specific maintenance task I want to run or simply restart or configure a server and the like..Thanks

Then do that via SSH, not SNMP
