the exam blueprint on Cisco's site still lists SDM in the topics and has no mention of CCP.

cool, just wanted to confirm.
I am using SDM at home but I saw SDM is no longer available for download on cisco.com (may just be hidden)

i'd imagine the next exam update will phase out SDM.

Trust me, you'll want to know SDM for this.

just watch your version of java. the ones supported are very old and vulnerable.

If you have a second computer I would suggest to load SDM with the vulnerable java version on that,
and work through the labs from there. so that your real home computer does not get compromised.

Hmm it seems I'm running into that problem. I have Java 6 update 30 and it will not load SDM. It keeps trying to run this file runAPP.shtml from Google Chrome although IE is the default web browser. I tried installing 1.5.2 to test and that didn't fix the issue either.

What I used:

Java Runtime Settings:
JRE 1.6.0_03 C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03 -Xmx256m

You will also need to allow scripts to run locally under the IE security settings so it will parse/execute the shtml versus display it as text. I can't remember the exact option needed but it was something that had to do with enable scripts to execute.

You are the best writeerase... you're post lead to some leads and a quick registry edit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.shtml and add ed a string named "Content Type" and value of "text/html". Worked right after! Thanks ;)

I was able to find SDM on cisco.com. it was under CCP
I actually downloaded both and have been going back and forth.

actually I really dont like SDM it is really clunky. it seems however that CCP is almost the same.
it is like they took all the crap of SDM and fixed it.

things like additional tasks are gone but all the same fields are under the corresponding tabs.

I love CCP and would much rather use it.

does anyone else think that if I use CP to study for SDM questions I will still be able to get it?

I mean come on, SDM is kind of lame dont you think?

The interface is about the same on both products is about the same. You will need to know how to move around in it. If you have the cisco press book, use the exam engine in the back of it. It is the best one i have ever used.

There are differences between the two but I used CCP whilst I was studying as it was easier to obtain and get working properly and then I familiarised myself with SDM a couple of weeks before the exam

But yes you will absolutely need to know SDM for the exam

Oh and Good luck :D
