Hey all,

Anyone know a good way of depicting serial links in Visio? Manually drawing is pretty clunky and quick searches in google isn't turning up much.

There is a comm-link in the networking and peripherals section.

Just use regular connectors and label your interfaces. If you prefer, you can color-code them or apply a dash pattern so that they stand out more.

QFT.

Using the lighting line seems more offensive than useful.

Yall are so bland. Diagrams should be a form of art complete with lightning and fireballs.

I use line weight, color, and style to indicate the type of connection.

weight is bandwidth
1 is < 100M
3 is 100M
5 is 1G
7 is 10G

color is type of cable
black = CAT5
red = multimode fiber
green = single mode fiber
blue = other

line style is number of cables.
Style 1 = 1
Style 2 = 2
etc

We obviously run a primarialy ethernet setup so this works for us. You of course can modify the three items to match what you need to show.

For customer diagrams I just use labelled lines. For my core diagrams I use line thickness and colour to specify what my links are.

I hate lightning bolts

Yeah I don't like the lightning bolts either.

No biggie; I was hoping there'd be something out there that resembled the serial links in GNS3 (Besides taking a screenshot in GNS3 :) ) that I could use in Visio.

Thanks all.

just as a most above are saying, I use lines with color and thickness and then create a Key box that breaks down all the links.

Also if you want to use a similar link as in GNS3 why dont you just create one in Visio? Not too difficult, a little google searching should be able to help you.

This is what I do as well, though every now and then I'll throw in a lightning bolt for a wireless bridge :P

funnie. when we were upgrading the fiber in our data center, there was no Visio image for a fiber break out box, so someone
used a image of a turtle, ever since then we refer to them as "turtles".
