Does anyone here have experience of Microsoft Lync 2010 in a Cisco Catalyst environment. In particular I'm interested in how you have deployed QoS alongside Cisco Phones...

Apparently there is the ability to mark packets from directly from the client but I'm reluctant to trust all DSCP markings on the access layer, currently I use a conditional trust when Cisco Phones are attached.

what kind of catalyst switches ? 3560 or 3750 ? I wouldn't deploy QoS on these, too few buffers, it'll just cause more problems in the end.

3560 and 3750's.

QoS is already deployed to accommodate the voice, why wouldn't you deploy it because of the buffers? Surely that's more of a reason to deploy...

Find out which ports the application uses and then marks packets based on that

small buffers means queues fill up to quickly and packet drops follow.

my experience with the 3560 and 3750 qos, packets were being dropped at a much higher rate with qos deployed
then using simple FIFO.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but the app has the ability to mark the packets itself so didn't know whether to just trust a particular subnet / port or something along those lines.

It's typical Microsoft, I've been reading their 15 page 'QoS deployment guide' today, on one hand they say the product is designed to be able to work without QoS (I think because their codecs are adaptive), on the other hand they say you can configure it to use the DiffServ framework... I suppose I just need to know whether or not it will work properly without QoS... I suspect not.



Hmm, can't say I've ever compared it with QoS disabled compared to enabled. I've always had QoS configured on this platform for Voice as per the QoS SRND and it just 'works'.
