I've used the search function but couldn't find anything conclusive.

Anyway, as the new guy at work I've been asked to find good options for network mapping software. I don't know any good ones. I do know a perfect one doesn't exist, but if you have to suggest one, what would you suggest?

Extra information:
- All devices (should) run SNMP, so it's best based on this. I suppose that's easiest.
- Cisco is a large part of the network, but adaptability to other vendors may be taken into consideration.
- For now, price is not taken into account.
- It's should ideally give a visual representation of the network, where one can freely add text, extra images (e.g. clouds for the non-local parts).
- The more the software gathers for information itself , the better. However, manual editing and adding is okay.

Anyone have ideas? I'm not too experienced on this part...

I always liked intermapper

not really a network mapping tool, but a cool visual network monitoring software tool.

back when I was in the army, we used SNMPc and it was pretty much everything you are asking for. It would not only report problems on devices, but the links between devices. It's not exactly cheap though. You can arrange detected devices to represent anything you want visually, to form any topology (I used to get in trouble for making the network look like a penis). It can also poll subnets.

When I went out in the corporate world, I was a bit taken aback when they handed me the password to our web server holding the IP Maps, and a copy of Visio.

Most of the big NMS products will create network maps (thinking SolarWinds, Zabbix, What's Up Gold, maybe Zenoss?). SolarWinds also has a standalone product called LANSurveyor, but I have not tried it. You should be able to find free trials for those, and some are open source.

For Cisco devices you can use Cisco LAN Management tools (your account in Cisco should help you downloading these). Cisco ANA is another software in which you can add any vendor' device (primarily Cisco  ) and use Cisco ANA NetworkVision to see network topology at different layers (physical, LAN, IP, MPLS etc...)

Thanks for the extra tips. I'm currently testing WhatsUpGold, which is ok. I tried The Dude but it was quite messy for the topology I need. Netbrain looks promising.

Have a look at ENM v1.2 that I have made if you are looking for a simple tool that just was made for mapping.
Cisco(CDP+snmp) exclusive though.

Hello everyone,

The code below map's networks drive in Win 2000 flawlessly , but does nothing on XP machines. Any suggestions as to why? I would think there is no difference in any Win OS from 98 on.

Does XP demand a user/pass?

Thank you in advance,
AllenJones
