IPv4 and IPv6 on Arris modem/router

Tue Aug 25, 2015 7:18 pm

So, WOW brought me a shiny new cable modem/router. It is:

ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 / PC 1.5 Touchstone Residential Gateway
SW_REV: 9.1.87E

Looking at the attached client list on the admin pages, I can see that most of my devices on my home intranet have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses but a couple (such as my Synology DS413J file server) have only an IPv6 address.

So, why would some have both? And some have only IPv6? And since my Synology is shown as having only an IPv6 address, why am I able to still access it via the IPv4 IP I had reserved for it?

My personal router (now out of the mix) I had attached to the previous cable modem only provided IPv4 IPs, so this is all new to me.

Return to IPv6
