Hey guys, I'm as new here as I am to networking; so I'm sorry if I come off as pretty ignorant.

I've been experiencing problems with internet speeds at my church and my home. They both have security keys, but many people use it. I was wondering - Is there a free tool to monitor who/which device is taking up all of the bandwidth? Something that kind of points out, "Hey, this guy is really slowing you down". Possibly even (But not necessarily) kill their connection?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to any advice!
Clay

Unless there are enterprise grade products such as firewalls or routes then there isn't a real good way to monitor.

there are free netflow programs... but like texanmutt said unless you have decent gear on site and at home its going to be tough to get that information.

check the arp, mac, and nat (translation) tables and see who is doing what by ip address, mac address, and machine/pc/device name
and see what IP address and TCP port they are connected to, then you can put some pieces together like a detective - like see who is on what website by ip address, maybe youll find someone is downloading torrents or something!

so you want to look at/capture:

hosts table
mac address table
arp (or ip arp) table
nat table or nat translations

gather this data and post it up and maybe we can help isolate some likely bandwidth hogs

Otherwise, you need some advanced network tools/business class gear more or less to do any better..

That's it. Unless you have internet connection or you have access to the computer, you can't monitor.

I use a linux distribution called "Untangle" here at work there are ~100 computers going through it. It is free. You can then use a utility called iftop to monitor. It is very easy to setup. You will need a computer with at least 2 network cards. Google Untangle.
