Long Range Networking

Wed Mar 29, 2017 11:33 am

I am working on a project where we have a need for some long range networking. When I say long range, I mean 5-20 miles (most often ~ 10 miles). Currently, the system in place is using 900MHz Radio transmission to cover the long distances. This somewhat works, but has very limited bandwidth and speeds (10/half), but is cost effective for what it is.

In an ideal world, we would lay single mode fiber running out to everything, but that is quite cost prohibitive. Another option would be to use Microwave for the transmission, but that requires better line of site and would require tall towers to be built (also cost prohibitive).

I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas / has worked with anything like this before and can throw out anything. I've found some long range APs, but they are limited to ~5 miles which isn't long enough.

Note this isn't just 1 site to 1 site, it is many sites going out to many remote locations.

Any thoughts?
