Hello I am new to the forum and im currently studying networking in college. At the moment I am doing an assignment but I have hit a wall with certain questions so I hope someone on here can help me as I have limited networking knowledge

1. What device would be necessary to link two networks of identical type? What devices would be necessary to link two networks of dissimilar types?

I would say a network card and HUB for identical type but I do not know if this is correct

2. Describe the parameters governing the choice of cable type for a given network. What are the three main types of cables used in computer networks?

I can answer the second part of this question but not the first

Thanks for any help that can be given

1. Is hard to answer without more information. What is a identical type, what is dissimilar? Same/different subnets? Cable types? Differing bandwidth? LAN/WAN?

2. I'll give you a hint: obviously cable length is going to change the choice. Three types of cables? Not sure...

Thanks for the reply. I posted the same questions on another forum and my topic got locked... :/

The first question is word for word, I have no more info to go on. I think it means what devices are needed to link a ring network to another ring network. Then how would you link a star network to a ring network?

Would it be wireless? And the cables shielded twisted pair cable ,coaxil cable and fiber optic cable ??

Most text book questions will have the answers embedded in the chapter, and the answers will pertain to the topic that they're talking about. So if that chapter was in regards to physical layer characteristics of two dissimilar networks, then they probably wouldn't be looking for an answer on linking two different layer 3 networks.

1. Linking two similar networks -- hub, but switch would be better. Linking two dissimilar networks -- router.
2. Some answers I've come across over the years -- cable length, susceptibility to EMI, security. Three types of cables -- how about four? UTP, STP, fiber, coax.
