Hello

May be you can guide me with this.

I am used to play some Battlefield 2 in the evenings. Im from Chile(in the very south of America) and the Battlefield server I play is in Argentina (where are neighboring countries). Last week all was good, but this week the things changed. Normally I played with a ping=40. Now I got ping = +150. I did a tracert from my PC and this is what I get:

Tracing route to gs192151.localstrike.com.ar [200.43.192.151]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 192.168.224.82
4 11 ms 8 ms 10 ms 192.168.22.41
5 13 ms 15 ms 15 ms 192.168.15.117
6 62 ms 17 ms 29 ms 192.168.15.49
7 15 ms 26 ms 28 ms 192.168.15.193
8 193 ms 160 ms 179 ms xe-0-1-1.ar4.SCL1.gblx.net [64.215.25.153]
9 154 ms 171 ms 151 ms 64.208.27.198
10 130 ms 131 ms 129 ms telecom-argentina.baires3.bai.seabone.net [195.2

11 232 ms 137 ms 132 ms telecom-argentina.baires3.bai.seabone.net [195.2

12 156 ms 145 ms 140 ms host93.186-153-152.telecom.net.ar [186.153.152.9

13 143 ms 142 ms 144 ms host210.190-225-249.telecom.net.ar [190.225.249.
210]
14 147 ms 146 ms 138 ms host141.200-3-81.telecom.net.ar [200.3.81.141]
15 * * * Request timed out.
16 * * * Request timed out.

The latency is in the 8 hop. I did a whois to the IP shown in the 8 hop and is from USA!(Global Crossing ISP). So to get the Argentinian server the packet goes to USA two times(hop 8 and 9) and then it goes to Argentina. Im sure if a make a complain to my ISP I would not get nothing. What do you suggest to do in this case? The ISP is not going to change the routing because a Chilean player can't get the latency it wants. I am playing BF2 for months and this is happening only now. May be an ISP guy here can give me a tip in what to do.

Thanks!

Start your own server. ;)

Seriously though, that's a nasty hop they are taking. Sounds like they lost a major South American link.

I'm not convinced that it's coming to the United States. If you look at the DNS hostname on hop 8, you'll see 'SCL,' which is the airport code for 'Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport' :-). ISPs will typically put city names or airport codes in their DNS hostnames to indicate where the circuit is located, which seems to be the case on hop 8. The other hostnames on your path either include the word 'argentina' or '.ar' to tell us that the path is still within Argentina. And based on 'gblx,' I would agree that Global Crossings owns the link.

I would call Global Crossings or submit a ticket to them and ask if they're having any issues in that particular region. Be ready to provide the IPs. I did this same thing yesterday with another ISP and actually got a positive answer.

FYI: it's perfectly possible that the traffic flow from two adjacent cities or countries traverses other countries or takes an reasonably long path. I think this is called 'hair-pinning.'

And for hop 9, I'd assume they never got around to putting it in DNS.

I made a Whois and it says that the IP is from USA but it doesn't mean that the equipment with the IP address is indeed in USA.

You are right with this.

How would you do this? Making a call? In my case it would be a long distance call.

Have you done this before?

Thanks.

Get your ISP to speak to them. GC are not going to listen to a lone user

I gonna try calling the ISP.

I made a tracert from another ISP and the result is worse:

Z:\clusters>tracert 200.43.192.151

Traza a la dirección gs192151.localstrike.com.ar [200.43.192.151]
sobre un máximo de 30 saltos:

1 2 ms <1 ms 1 ms 10.10.100.1
2 10 ms 4 ms 3 ms
3 8 ms 5 ms 13 ms 192.168.150.33
4 4 ms 5 ms 14 ms 190.208.5.69 [190.208.5.69]
5 6 ms 13 ms 8 ms 200.27.5.233
6 5 ms 11 ms 3 ms ge1-2.igr1.santiago.ip.telmexchile.cl [200.27.5.114]
7 9 ms 10 ms 5 ms 190.208.9.9 [190.208.9.9]
8 171 ms 173 ms 176 ms if-2-0-0.core4.mln-miami.as6453.net [66.198.82.1]
9 175 ms 171 ms 170 ms 64.86.28.25
10 170 ms 177 ms 173 ms 216.6.48.6
11 339 ms 307 ms 319 ms telecom-argentina.baires3.bai.seabone.net [195.22.220.
98]
12 316 ms 315 ms 310 ms telecom-argentina.baires3.bai.seabone.net [195.22.220.
98]
13 312 ms 315 ms 312 ms host113.190-224-165.telecom.net.ar [190.224.165.113]
14 313 ms 317 ms 314 ms host18.200-117-124.telecom.net.ar [200.117.124.18]
15 314 ms 317 ms 316 ms host141.200-3-81.telecom.net.ar [200.3.81.141]

As you can see now it seems the packet again goes to USA and takes a long path to Argentina. May be my home ISP had a direct link to Argentina and my job ISP hasn't. I'm gonna try to make some consulting to the ISPs but I think that my battlefield2 days are over :(.

Unfortunately this thing sometimes happens. For all you know your ISP could be in a financial dispute with a particular carrier and hence that carrier has stopped providing transit. Of course you are not likely to get this information out of your ISP of course.

Or maybe the previous faster link is just broken. Again your ISP is likely not to admit anything
