Hi, I am fairly new to cisco switches but have recently purchased a cisco catalyst 2940 as i need to config IGMP on my network.

I have connected up console cable and created a connection using hyperterminal but everytime i start the switch it gets as far as:

00:00:21: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Vlan1, changed state to down

and just hangs doing nothing. Is the switch faulty, is there something i need to do first or am i just an idiot? (or all three!?)

Thanks for any suggestions

Cliffy

if you disconnect your hyperterminal session and then reconnect, does it work? If so, its likely a problem with your serial port settings.

If it stays hung, sounds like the switch is wack.

I would try performing password recovery. This will allow you to boot the switch without the saved config, then inspect the 'line con 0' settings in the config file.

Thanks for your quick replies

Dinger:- No, It stays hung even with after disconnecting/reconnecting.

Javentre:- How would i go about doing a password recovery (sorry for asking such basic questions - like i said, very new to cisco switches!)

I should have mentioned that i made the console cable, wuld that make any difference? I'm seeing the switch boot so am guessing the pin-outs i found are correct!

Thanks again for your suggestions

Use a known good console cable ... you may not have a good connection on one of your tx wires (pc to cisco).

Try messing with the speed setting on the serial port.

Changing the speed settings just causes jibberish to be displayed in hyperterminal... but thanks for the suggestion

Could it possibly be an issue with your hyperterm? Have you tried using another program like putty?

In that case I would set the confreg to skip the startup config. Go into romon and enter confreg, it should ask you if you want to ignore system config. Hit y for yes and then reboot it to see if to still hangs.

Typically you don't mess with the confreg on a small cat switch, you just rename the config file (config.text). The link to accomplish this was already provided.
