Hi to all i need information about CiscoWorks LMS 4.0
I have to monitor a network with 120 devices (router and switch Cisco) and my idea is to suggest to use CiscoWorks LMS 4.0.
First i saw that is not more sell so i think to replace it with LMS 4.0 Small Enterpise I.
I need:
-to monitor the network: fault notification, fault monitoring, perfromance monitoring, devices confoguration, accounting

Based on my request do you think LMS 4.0 Small Enterprise I is the right choice?
Do you have some use case in a contest like my case? (100 devices)
Based on your exeperince, can you provide a name of some freeware software able to mange a network with 100 devices?

Thanks.

Cisco does not make the best NMS software. I would check into other vendors or maybe some of the opensource stuff. Solwarinds, Paessler, Nagios, ManageEngine, etc. Couple are site sponsors so go click on the links.

What he said.

I've used Cisco LMS before, it's horrible to navigate, it's buggy and it's expensive. Solarwinds Orion is far superior, I think they do a free trial you can run as a VM.

+1 on the statements above.

Cisco Works is a waste of money and you'll get more gray hairs than you could dream off

We just did kick out Cisco Works and do use now Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM), Network Configuration Monitor (NCM) and Netflow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) -> way better.

Solarwinds does offer different licenses based on the amount of your devices to manage, usually they also provide some sort of discount.

Nagios is a good freeware, just dont forget that it takes some time to customize it and get everything running as you like it, but the software is free.

I'm hearing that LMS 4 is pretty good. Haven't used it yet, but I wouldn't rush to judge this one.

possible, I did quite some stuff with 3.x and older, but this just somehow fucked it up for me
But to be honest, CW2k needs around 1 full time position to manage it and use it to its best.. at least it did for the older versions.

I've had a little play with the trial... it's still horrible to navigate. Solarwinds is far superior IMO :)

Do you use any of these to manage IOS deployments?

Do any of them integrate with Cisco to manage/monitor SmartNet?

We use Nagios quite extensively, but it's a pain.

We use kiwi cat tools. it doesn't integrate with smartnet as far as I'm aware... Granted, that is one of the better features of lms!

I realize this is an old post, but I just ran across it and had to put in my $.06 (inflation). I have had the opportunity to work with 3 different iterations of the Ciscoworks/LMS/Cisco Prime product over about 10 years and I currently have LMS 4.2.1 and LMS 2.6 running. These products have always come bundled as a bug's nest. If LMS would actually just work like it is supposed to it is a pretty good product. Unfortunately, that is rarely the case. It took literally years for the LMS 2 product to become mostly functional at LMS 2.6, and not without a significant # of hours of my own time fighting with TAC. And that is one of the major problems - support is dismal. The support team will not admit a problem exists let alone address it. I finally bit the bullet and moved my device inventory from the old stable 2.6 to the new improved 4.2. And LMS 4 is LMS 2 with a shiny new paint job and the same tired engine. What amazes me is how the developers manage to keep the same guts as the old system and still manage to introduce so many new software flaws. Now the struggle with TAC begins. Not sure why I bother to call them. It's like calling your ex-wife to whom you are paying enormous child support payments only to find that she is spending it all on crack.

I think I am going to look into the Solarwinds products.
