Certs: CCENT, (Revising ICND2 for CCNA)
Hello,

I am currently studying for the first part of the CCNA exam - ICND1 which I have booked for next week.

I have been thinking lately about the exact career path I want to go down. I know some people might say focus on these exams before thinking about this but I just want some feedback;

Basically, after the CCNA exam (whenever I may complete it) I'm thinking of either doing the Server+ (CompTia) or Linux+ (also compTia),

I believe that the Server+ will be helpful with the CCNA in terms of getting a job but would Linux+ and CCNA be advantageous?
Im thinking of going for the Linux Cert next but only if I really believe there is potential getting a job with CCNA and Linux+ being beneficial to my application.

If you believe that doing the Server+ instead would be better then please say.

All opinions/feedback welcome.

Many thanks.

It depends on what you want to do. Do you want to do servers or networking? Or both?

I got my current job not because of my networking skills, but because they needed someone on the team who didn't fail at Linux. I had no networking of linux certs, but I proved in the interview that I knew my way around bash and could subnet. The rest is history.

Personally I don't think ANY of the Comptia certs are any good. If you want to do a Linux cert then do something like the RedHat cert

Gotta agree there, the comptia certs aren't held in any high regard in the industry.

CCNA and linux is a very good base to work from, so if you want some linux certs go after the lpi linux certs I think you have to do red hats course before you can do their test so that could prove expensive.

Thanks for the advice,

I have just looked at the Linux course I mentioned above and it is powered by LPI:

Here it is:
http://certification.comptia.org/getcer ... linux.aspx

I don't know if that changes your thoughts or not? Either way I appreciate your feedback.

It doesn't matter these days, the "Powered by LPI" CompTIA cert are the same exams as LPIC-1 and you can apply for your LPIC if you get the Linux+ cert

Google the 3-in-1 Linux cert to find out how you should go about it

What are your thoughts on Server+ ? Or is there another qualification you'd recommend? I know there is MCSE butis it not worth going generic istead with Server+ ?

The only CompTIA certification I recomend anyone is Security+, and only if you want to work for DoD. Nobody cares about CompTIA certifications. While I know of the server+ I have never heard of anyone that has it, or taken the exam.

Don't waste your time or money on CompTIA certs.

As everyone is saying, skip CompTIA certs. If you want MS certs work on your MCITP. If you want Linux certs work on your RHCSA/RHCE.

Thanks for the advice,

I have now passed CCENT and I am booking the CCNA/ICND2 exam very soon.

I think I may do CCNA Security afterwards or maybe skip that and start learning CCNP.

Skip Security and go for CCNP. I regret wasting the time on the Security exam. CCNP will be more beneficial as far knowledge and on the resume.

Thanks, I have recently managed to land myself a NOC engineer job based on my entry level CCENT certification (I'm revising for my CCNA exam) so I am really excited about that and I believe it is the starting point for a good career in networking.
