This may be a dumb question, but is a 10G interface also capable of 10/100/1000? Or at least just 1G?

Specifically, I'm interested in getting a 10G line card for my core 6509 to replace a 1G card, and then gradually upgrading the distribution layer switches to 10G. But most of them would remain at 1G for a while. But all the 10G stuff I see is clearly divided from the 10/100/1000 stuff.

Depends on the hardware. Some is 10g only and some is 1/10g.

If I remember correctly the 6500 10G stuff is 10G only.

I've not found one yet that will negotiate down to 10/100 Mbps.

The only 1G/10G interfaces I've seen have been on the Nexus platforms.

C3KX-NM-10G also, to the 3750X. Im not 100% sure, but isnt it that like SFP+ often can be backwards compatible with standard 1G SFP, but X2 and XENPAK is 10G only? Otoh there arent any SFP+ cards to the 6500, only X2 and XENPAK.

X2 can take the TwinGig adapters, which have two SFP slots.

Right, good catch. Is that always the case, that any X2 port on any blade can use a TwinGig? Or does it depend also, like the SFP+/SFP case.

Also the X6904-40G-2T are able to use the FourX CFP to insert 4*10G SFP+, but doesnt seem to be backward compatible with 1G SFP.

Nah, every X2 doesn't take TwinGig. I think it's only 3K and 4500.

6700 series blades are stuck at 10Gig.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collate ... Sheet.html

the best way to tell is if the interface is listed in product data as 10/100/100/10GIG (10000?)

you can use a CVR-X2 and configure for 2 1GIG slots however as vito mentioned this is only on 3560E, 3750E and X series and 4516-10GE SUPs (as well as other 4500 series SUPs with 10GE)
