I have a 3640 router that has a NM-2fe-2w card installed. There is a wic-2t card installed in the WIC slot. I am running IOS v 12.4(5a).

My problem is that no serial interfaces will show up. I can see the FastEthernet interfaces and use them just fine, but I can't get the serial ints to show up. Show controllers just reveals the FE interfaces.

So far I have tried switching out different wic-2t cards, and moving wic-2t to different WIC slots. I then tried using a different NM. Then I tried moving the NM to a different slot. I even changed to a slightly different version of my IOS (from 7 to 5a).

Nada. Zilch. I just cant get the serial lines to show up. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with the 3640 or any other router model? Is there anything I can do?

EDIT: The Serial interfaces can be seen, but I can't get the line to come up.

Does the wic work on another router?

Yeah, the WICs work in other routers. So does the NMs. Its just this 3640 thats giving me problems. Is my router hardware bad or could it still be an issue with IOS or some other unseen issue? How can I test these things?

Are you sure you do not have a nm-2e2w?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Yeah, both FastEthernet interfaces show up. They are both 100Mb, so I'm not using a NM-2e-2w.

Are you sure the wic is seated all the way in the slot. Maybe the internal slot isnt making good contact with the card. Just a thought.

Thank you for that. I think you helped me some. Even though Im not using a nm-2e2w, you bring up a great point. I think the other NM I used to check if it was a NM problem was a NM-1e2w, which isn't supported according to that link. So, that explains why the 3640 wouldn't see the wic-2ts with the nm-1e2w.

Now, using the NM-2fe2w, I can see the serial interfaces, I just can't get them to work. I can't get the line to come up. I've tried multiple cables. My config is just an ip and clock rate and the no shut command. Maybe my NM is bad. Maybe something with the router. It will cost me the same amount for a NM-2fe2w or a 3640, so I'll have to decide on how I want to go about the next stage in this process. Thanks for the help.

Put the nm-2fe2w into another 3640 with the same version of IOS and see if it works. If it does then it is the first router that is having a problem with the nm. If the second router has the same problem then it is the nm that is the problem.
