Hey all, wanted to get some feedback from some of the more experienced folks.

So, now that I got Security+ out of the way I'm back on the CCNP wagon. After that, I can't decide whether I should work on the written while the R&S stuff is somewhat fresh in my mind, or work on a few other things like CCDP and then come back to it. What kind of experience should you have going into the written? Would you recommend against it for someone who's relatively new to the field?

if your are new in the field I honestly wouldnt recommend it. The written is not that hard of a test if you were studying for your ccnp exams well. The test is pretty much a price of admission for the lab. You do not receive any certification.

I swear Im not bitter.

Studying for the written will give you more information and I´d say a bigger picture on the R&S part. You dont have to even take the test until you fell you´re ready for the lab or do have to recert the CCxP certs, but it will give you a wealth of new more indeep knowledge so the learned itself is not bad/wrong/whatever :)
But as burnyd said, the written alone is not giving you anything, except the CCxP and CCxA recert

Rumor has it v5 of the lab will be released next year. Don't know how that impacts your decision.

I have no intention of doing the lab until A) I'm more experienced, and B) My company pays for it. I'm not really looking for a cert... just the challenge of passing it and the knowledge I'll gain studying for it. I'm just not sure if it would be easier to do fresh off the CCNP track (Whenever I get that done), or if I can take a break and work on some other things, like CCDA/DP, BCNE, and JNCIA.

I would suggest the CCNA-Security or something, if you have the CCNP you can do most routing/switching stuff, I personally suggest getting more well rounded. I always have visions of a CCIE not knowing how to do anything on an ASA and swear that won't happen to me :-P

You only have 18 months after passing the written to take your first lab attempt or you will need to retake the written. So go after your CCDP or other areas that interest you until your ready to jump in the CCIE pool.

Ahhhhh that's huge. That settles it - I'll hold off for now. Thanks.

Regarding security.... I know it's big, but I really, really don't like it. I don't mean I don't like 'being secure', I just find the subject matter to be very boring. I know I'll have to get on it someday... but I'm going to avoid it as long as possible.
