I have an 8 port Gigabit EHWIC in my Cisco 1921 router. A darn nice little switch module.

However, through my research, I am unable to find if I am able to change the way the NIC lights (green LEDs) on each port function. They basically just stay lit 100% non flashing when connected regardless of the port speed and duplex and ignore flashing for any activity.

Is there a deep layer command on these EHWIC cards to make them flash with activity like full standalone switches? Trust me when you have enough switch ports filled up it does make monitoring your networks health and activity by having the port led's respond to traffic flow. At least in my opinion.

This is probably a really stupid question but not asking a question might be even more stupid.

Maybe it just a bad design flaw on Cisco's part.

surprised that a 1921 would support such a card, but it does,
so from the specs

Code:
LED indicators

• Link status LED: One LED per port for indicating link status
• PoE LED: One LED per port system for PoE status indication

Yeah, I think too many older Cisco guys think the 1921 is like a belkin router or something. It is a very capable machine. I can intervlan route on a stick and its CPU is able to forward over 75MB/s over gig links just fine at 100% cpu usage. On same vlan usage it is 99-100% gig line speed all day long at like 1-2% cpu usage.

I was just concerned that the LED Lights were absolutely useless on these EHWICs and they actually are. I think regardless of the base router it is installed in the EHWIC nic status light design is terrible on Ciscos part.

Why is it terrible?

At the end of the day the 1921 is designed as a branch router and therefore will probably be sat with the interfaces facing a wall and never be seen.

If Cisco can save a per pennies by only making it a link light and not an activity light then why not?

You know, the 10G ports on the ASR9K don't blink either. Maybe I should have just bought a proper router like a Belkin. :P

Wow you shelled out for one of those haha, unless you own a business with it in there. Nice piece of gear.

back on topic....

Some of us like to have blinky little flashy lights that all.

Guessing what the above poster said, it, well all routers in my opinion, are made to just sit there and face a wall really in a closet or a rack.
