Configuring static routing, how can i get a ping to go through a diff. route depending which host pinged?
I want to ping host B from host A. Host A is connected to router1, which is connected to 2 other routers, router2 and router3. On the other end, routers 2 & 3 meet router4. Like a diamond topology. So basically routers 2 & 3 lead to the same place, router4, which is connected to host B. I need to configure static routing so that when I ping host B from A, both ping request and ping reply go through router1, 2, 4, host B, and back. THEN the part I dont understand, doing it the other way around: When I ping host A from host B, how can I get both ping request and ping reply to go through router4, THEN THROUGH ROUTER 3, then router1, then A, and back again to host B?

You would need to use some kind of policy based routing to get what you are wanting to achieve.

You can't just use static routing as there is no way to discriminate between a ping from A->B and a ping from B->A in terms of routing, you would need to define a policy to match on the particular ICMP types and their source/destination then direct the packet up the correct serial link.

what purpose to you want to reach with that implementation?

and shall this routing only apply to ICMP, or do you want all other traffic routed in the same way? Because that would be nearly impossible to realize.

Try equal-cost paths in your routing topology if you're trying to load-balance. Or use /32 routes for each host. Other than that, controlling it on such a fine level as you ask is probably not possible, nor desired.
