Hi

I'm trying to configure a 2940 switch to trunk. I just can't get it to work.

On the interface I have added: switchport mode trunk

The default is encap for this switch is dot1q, so there is no need, or ability to add/change the encap mode. Also all vlans are being allowed by default. I still can't get any port to trunk. Need to get G0/1 to trunk, have also tried to trunk f0/6 to the switch in my office. Any suggestions?

Also can't find the command to change the management VLAN. I do not use vlan 1 for management. Can I change the Mang VLAN on this switch?

Thanks!!
Tom

To change the SVI on the switch simply create a new SVI 'interface Vlan345' and then apply an IP address to that interface. Most of the smaller L2 only switches will only allow you to have one active SVI for management at one time so you will most likely find that when you bring up the new management SVI that the old one goes down/down.

In terms of the interface not trunking can you post the exact config from both sides of the trunks and also the output of 'show int trunk' and 'sh vlan' from both switches.

Thanks for the SVI tip, it works. On other Cisco switches I work on, I've had to use the management command to designate the Mang Vlan.

Currently I have the 2940 switch connected to a 3524XL switch in my office. Trunking still doesn't work. But when I connect the two using access ports assigned to vlan 100, the vlan 100 traffic and the management traffic works fine. Port f0/1 on the 3524 and Port f0/7 on the 2940.

For Trunking I am trying to use port f0/22 on the 3524 and port f0/6 on the 2940. Long term I will be using Port g0/1 for trunking.

Here is the show run for both switches. I have ??? out the descriptions and passwords.

Thanks for your help!!!

The question becomes what is doing the routing for this seeing that both of these switches are layer 2 only ? You will never be able to talk between subnets without a Layer 3 routing device. Those switches only need a address to manage them and for no other reason . If you do a show vlan do all the L2 vlans show up as active on both switches? You can get rid of all those "interface vlan XX " entries except vlan 100 , on the 3500 the rest serve no purpose. A quick guess would be you did not create the L2 vlans on the 3500.

@ Vipergg. I think you may be over thinking this. Yes they are both Layer 2 switches. But they are attached to a larger working network with multiple active VLAN's, a core layer 3 switch and a router. My management vlan issue has been solved by an earlier post. The current issue is I just can't get the 2940 to trunk. This should work locally in my office when connected to switch there and on the core switch, which is the ultimate plan. There must be a command I'm missing or doing wrong here.

I will post the show interface results as requested later today.

Thanks for everyone's help.

PS what does "Report this post" mean?
