Limit speed on router LAN port

Wed Oct 12, 2016 2:55 am

I thought there should be some models allowing you to setup the maximum speed for each ethernet port on the router.
But after googling it - looks like it's only possible using a switch because the LAN ports on routers are hardwired and the speed can be controlled only using IP and MAC address control.
So is it possible and if so how and on which models? Thanks!

Hi,

IP and MAC control is an access control method which either permits or denies traffic. If you want to limit speed, then you are looking to add shaping to an interface. Adding a service-policy (policy-map) to an interface is what you are after and should be supported by ever router, at least all the ones that I have come into contact with.

R.
