The wife and I are thinking about planning a vacation 1-2 weeks in Germany. Anyone have any suggestions on what to see, how to get around, good places to stay? We are just starting this planning but are really excited about making this trip. Things seem pretty expensive overall, especially the flight from NYC.

We are not sure to be honest. We want to see a few cities and plan to travel by train and maybe rent a car for a couple days. I think we would want to spend a few days in Munich.

Berlin for dayz!

Berlin is a pretty amazing city. I'm not sure what you guys are into, but Berlin has a fantastic night life and plenty of stuff to do in terms of site seeing.

No trip to Germany would be complete without hitting Berlin, I'm certain you won't be disappointed.

Agreed on the Berlin part. You can do sightseeing, shopping and lots of stuff there. I went there a couple of years ago for a Rammstein concert just before christmas. They even had ladies in the stores demonstrating the underwear, now that is what I call service! :P

Should also add Hamburg to Munich and Berlin

Using the train might be the best idea, even though we dont have a lot speed limits here, there are a lot of traffic jams around on the motorways. Trains are way more relaxing than driving here.

I think I need to find a travel agent. This is the first time we are going to Europe as well.

Cologne would be near the top of my list of cities to see in Germany.

I would have to say visit Cologne ( Koln ) if you are around. Stop and check out the Dom if you get the chance.

Been living here for the past 4-5 years.

Munich and Berlin def. If you go to Munich you can hit Dachau pretty easily in a day as well.

I traveled Germany (Europe) as a teenager and then went again with the wife to Germany. It was great, flew into Frankfurt so we could use miles, headed the next day to Berlin and spent several days there site seeing. Then we went to Munich for Oktoberfest and had the time of our lives. Took a train to Munich to detox for a few days and then flew back home.
