I might be one of the few non-professional network people here. I'm pretty impressed with the credentials I see. I've always faked my way through my home networking, but recently decided it's time to actually learn a few things. A modest step, I bought the "TCP/IP in 24 hours" book and have read most of it. I know that's comical compared to university courses, but it should vastly increase my understanding. It's already helped me a bit on the job too where I have occasional exposure to networking.

I just recently purchased an IP camera, a PoE switch to power it, and an access point (to run in client bridge mode) to my existing 802.11 router to get video between an out building and my house. I'm still working on that. I don't have it figured out yet, but some of the things I've learned keep me from just randomly changing every setting in the router.

I'm going to spend a few hours reading this forum's posts and see what I pick up. I already read the "Read this first" post in the home wireless forum which was very good.

Welcome!
Well, I like your attitude. There's a ton of things to learn but if you learn one thing at a time, you'll slowly climb up the mountain and eventually start seeing patterns. In your sleep too by the way.

You've come to the right place. I was in your shoes a few years ago. Don't sweat it; you'll never be a pro. :) We all just do what we can.

Just have patience, stick with it, and as Project highlighted, get the fundamentals down. It makes learning more advanced concepts -much- easier.
