Cisco has been playing the game lately by creating viral-marketing like buzz for it’s upcoming announcements. Their most recent teases us with an online counter counting down to March 9th and this hint as to the nature of the announcement: “Cisco’s next innovation will help service providers prepare for the future by delivering anywhere to anywhere experiences.”
What could it be? Jim Duffy at the Cisco Subnet Blog/NetworkWorld is guessing either a MSC120 to compete with Juniper’s T1600 or 100GE interfaces.
I think the announcement will be interesting, but will not really affect most of us. First of all, it’s for ‘service providers’ and it’s brand new which both mean it’ll be expensive as all get out. Secondly, the wording ‘will help … prepare for the future’ doesn’t exactly sound like it’s a new and exciting technology itself, but an advancement of existing technology to ‘prepare’ providers. I’d guess that this announcement will be incremental but will hint at great things to come.
