On March 26, 2013, Cisco introduced new certification exams for ICND1, ICND2, and CCNA. In addition to content changes, there is also a significant change to the exam sequence structure.

This is a summary of these changes to the CCNA certification exams. The information is based on a number of public Cisco sources. For complete and official information about the CCNA certification exams refer to

Retiring CCNA Certification Exams

The current CCNA related exams retire on 30 September 2013:

CCNA certification is achieved by either passing the composite 640-802 exam or the 640-822 ICND1 exam and then the 640-816 ICND2 exam.

The retiring CCNA certification is the prerequisite for the CCNA specializations and for the three exam CCNP Routing and Switching certification.

ICND1 Practice Labs

I’ve created a handful of configuration and troubleshooting labs to help CCENT candidates refine their skills in preparation for exam day. These labs cover a good portion of the core ICND1 IOS fundamentals and require a thorough understanding of the Cisco IOS to complete.  Some labs do present unexpected obstacles not covered within the lab objectives to help demonstrate specific networking theory under normal conditions.

All routers that do not require configuration changes are locked.  Some labs may also only allow for Telnet or SSH connections.  It’s up to you to configure each device as you would remotely in the field or on the exam to complete each of the lab objectives.  These labs can get a little tricky and were designed to give capable ICND1 candidates with reasonable IOS experience a headache, so be patient.  When finished with a lab, you may compare your results with the provided answer sheet.  Have fun!

“We worked with the best serious game developers, educators and technical experts to produce a game that is not only fun, but will help you learn.” – Jerry Bush, Mind Share Game Project Lead, Cisco

When I had the opportunity to review CiscoPress’ new Cisco Mind Share game, I jumped at the chance. I’ve been a frequent visitor of the Cisco Arcade for quite some time, enjoying their free flash-based interactive networking games. The Cisco Arcade has been a much loved and well known area of education games throughout the Internet for several years so it’s no wonder that the Cisco Mind Share game has been in the “Game Spotlight” on their site for over a year.

CiscoPress finally released its full-fledged version of the Cisco Mind Share game in mid 2009 satisfying a lot of heightened attention and eager Cisco fans, myself included. I’ve had the great luxury of playing through this game several times and feel that the it’s a fine example of balance between constructive creativity, technical subject matter, and pure entertainment. Though this game is aimed specifically at teaching the core ICND1 curriculum (CCO), it offers is refreshing take on the fundamentals of networking regardless of your current skill level. CisoPress has recently announced they are offering their newly popular Cisco Mind Share game as a bundle with one of their most popular ICND1 study guides allowing those to study for the ICND1 exam alongside the game. Good thinking CisoPress!
